Bill Mann, saxophonist

Bill began playing sax in middle school, and within a couple of years while in high school was performing on weekends at dances and clubs. One band, on several occasions was either the opening act, or the backup band for major artists including Major Lance, The Drifters, and Johnny Maestro and The Brooklyn Bridge.
After attending Berklee College of Music, he performed with several bands before joining Spiral. Spiral traveled the east coast for 7 years performing at clubs and concerts, and shared the stage with The Little River Band, The Sanford-Townsend Band, and Mother’s Finest. Bill also wrote and recorded music with jazz harpist Michael Deep on two internationally released CD’s.
Bill now plays smooth jazz/R&B music on his tenor, alto, and soprano saxophones. You can contact him via his MySpace page, http://www.myspace.com/billmannsax.

Westwood Back Porch String Band

The Back Porch Band is a group of musicians from Westwood Baptist Church here in Cary.
They started getting together about 7 years ago with the idea just to have fun and play some
music. That idea is still alive today. The band’s motto is “bluegrass for the fun of it.”
Ranging anywhere from 5 to 12 musicians, depending on who shows up, and playing anything
from standard musical instruments to a wash tub bass, a washboard and a train whistle, the
group has sometimes been likened to the Country Bear Jamboree at Walt Disney World, but
without all the fur.
Nonetheless, the talented group performs a variety of gospel and traditional blue grass songs,
along with country tunes, Mississippi blues and whatever else they think might be fun. Over the
years the group has performed at many retirement centers, church gatherings, various social
gatherings, corporate and charity events, the Durham Ronald MacDonald house, Polk Youth
Center, Cary Winterfest, the Cary Farmer’s Market, the NC State Fair, and many others. The
band has traveled as far as Wilson (NC) for a pig picking and to the horse country of Virginia to
perform at the Goochland Days Spring Festival.

The band’s alternate motto is “will play for food – will stop playing for money.”
